Wakame is a seaweed harvested in March that grows from shallow waters to several metres deep, well exposed to light. The Ama harvest the seaweed with a sickle. By cutting just above the root, regrowth of the seaweed is possible.

Ama divers use a simple sickle to harvest the seaweeds
As the collection of seaweed (wakame, arame...) involves handling a lot of weight, the families of Ama divers usually participate in the fishing session on a boat, unloading the tanpo when it is full.
Each time they surface, Ama divers unload the seaweed into the tanpo.
Wakame grow on rocky areas where it can anchor itself firmly to resist tides and currents.
